THE HELLENISTIC PERIOD (330 – 30 B.C.)
This piece was designed from the works and decorative elements of the Hellenistic period. During this age one sees a mixture of Greek culture with the eastern culture of Asia Minor. Among the Anatolian kingdoms of the Hellenistic period, the kingdom of Pergamon was of special importance, Pergamon was influenced by Egypt from the south. In place of the papyrus used in Egypt, for example, the Pergamenes invented parchment. In statuary, the emotionally charged “pathetic” Pergamene style, based on a play of light and shadow, continued during Roman times as well.
